What is Expert Intelligence? Google unveils new AI-powered feature for users

Sharing details about the feature, the tech giant said in a blog post that Expert Intelligence is designed to help users engage with trusted sources through Google’s AI products.

“We’re committed to providing you with trusted, high-quality information. Today, we're taking another step in that mission by introducing Expert Intelligence, a cross Google initiative that helps you engage with your trusted sources through Google AI products,” Google said.

The company said users can now incorporate insights from leading authors, publications and domain experts, including from eligible titles they have purchased, directly into Gemini Notebook, with more Google products expected to support the feature in the future.

Google said its team members have been meeting authors and publishers over the past several months to understand how AI can help readers get more value from their books.

“One insight is that readers return to their favorite books repeatedly, and continue to apply the author’s lessons to their own life,” the company said.

To support this, Google has introduced the ability to add select e-books purchased through Google Play Books directly to a Gemini Notebook.

“This makes it simple for you to ask questions about the book and receive responses grounded directly in that book,” Google said.

Users can also use Gemini Notebook to explore books in different ways, including by generating infographics, audio overviews and quizzes based on the content.

Expert Intelligence has been launched with more than 100,000 books from major publishers, including Bloomsbury, De Gruyter Brill, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers, O’Reilly Media and Penguin Random House.

Google has also collaborated with more than 15 bestselling authors, including Steven Pinker, Michael Pollan and Jennifer Wallace, to curate special Featured Notebooks. These notebooks supplement their books with additional sources and interactive materials to help readers explore the authors’ work in greater depth.

The company said it has worked with authors and publishers to develop controls around the feature.

Users can check whether a book is eligible for Expert Intelligence through Google Play Books.

For eligible titles, Gemini Notebook will appear when users click the “Tools” badge on the book’s detail page.
