Pro Afzal Guru slogans: Jadavpur University rally under Centre's scanner

New Delhi/Kolkata, Feb 17 (IBNS): A day after slogans in favour of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and separatist Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani were raised during a rally held by Kolkata's prestigious Jadavpur University (JU)'s students, the Ministry of HRD has sought reports from the West Bengal government on the issue, sources said on Wednesday.

Protesting against the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) issue, few students of Jadavpur University organized a torch rally in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Besides attacking the BJP government and the RSS, pro Afzal and Geelani slogans, including "Afzal bole azadi", "Geelani bole azadi", "Kashmir mange azadi, Manipur vi mange azadi" and "Chhinke lenge azadi", were shouted from the protest march here.

Meanwhile, denying their involvements, one rally-organizer, Shounak Mukherjee, told IBNS, "Our rally was strictly against the wrongful arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar. Few outsiders might be shouting such slogans. We are not separatists and love our country. We are condemning it."

Condemning the incident and demanding immediate arrest of the students, who allegedly shouted 'anti-national' slogans, the Kolkata unit of the BJP has called for a protest march in the city on Wednesday afternoon.

The JNU is currently facing protests and counter protests with the police cracking down on students over the anti-India slogans raised earlier to mark the death anniversary of Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru on its campus in the national capital.
