Man saves Rs. 15 lakh, but one thing his parents do leaves him ‘guilty’
A Reddit user recently shared an emotional account of his personal life on the platform, revealing that he felt guilty after reaching a major financial milestone while watching his parents continue to cut back on everyday expenses.
The user said he had recently reached a point where he had saved Rs 15 lakhs—a milestone he had expected to make him feel proud. Instead, he said, it left him feeling “guilty and depressed.”
“I am typing this from my room while my parents are watching TV outside. Today I hit a personal savings milestone that I thought would make me super proud. Instead I just feel guilty and depressed,” the Reddit user wrote.
He said that during dinner, his father was worried about the electricity bill, while his mother quietly mentioned that she was postponing buying new glasses to save money.
“My dad worked hard his whole life and sacrificed everything so I could earn well today and no tensions,” he wrote.
The user said he wanted to tell his parents to spend freely and let him take care of their expenses. However, he was hesitant to reveal how much he had saved, fearing that his parents might put the money into traditional fixed deposits or that details of his finances could spread among relatives.
As a result, he said he remained silent during dinner.
“So I sat there, ate my dinner and stayed silent. It feels surreal living two lives—tracking numbers on my laptop while watching my parents hesitate over a ₹2,000 expense,” he wrote.
The post drew a variety of reactions from Reddit users, with several suggesting that he could support his parents financially without necessarily revealing his total savings.
“If the situation is so bad that they're worried over basic needs like electricity and glasses, why don't you give some more money at home while continuing your savings in parallel? I am assuming you live with them?” one user commented.
Another Reddit user suggested keeping his savings private while quietly taking care of his parents’ needs.
“Maybe just don't tell them how much you have and fulfil their needs,” the user wrote.
