The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata, is inviting applications for admission to its two-year Master's in Social Welfare (MSW) programme.

In a statement, the institute said the two-year, full-time MSW programme of the University of Calcutta combines academic learning with field-based experience, professional exposure and specialised practice.

The programme follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and a grading system and is structured across four semesters.

Students will undertake two compulsory internships and regular field visits while pursuing the course.

Eligibility Criteria

The minimum qualification for admission is a three-year bachelor's degree or a four-year honours degree, or any professional degree or equivalent programme/course from a university recognised by the University of Calcutta.

Candidates who have appeared for such examinations by June of the relevant academic session may also apply.

Internships and Field Visits

A key feature of the MSW programme is its emphasis on learning through practical experience. Internships and field visits provide students with direct exposure to professional organisations and diverse social-development initiatives.

Students have received internship opportunities with organisations including Larsen & Toubro, SAIL, ITC Foods, Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail, PNB MetLife, CRY, NHPC, IIM Calcutta Social Informatics Group, HelpAge India, CINI, Hindustan Copper and Anudip Foundation, among others.

The institute said such exposure enables students to understand professional environments and develop practical competencies that complement their academic learning.

Wide Spectrum of Career Opportunities

The institute said an MSW qualification can lead to career opportunities beyond the traditional social-work sector.

The programme prepares graduates for roles such as social-sector professionals, development practitioners, CSR professionals, labour-welfare specialists, researchers, community leaders and managers of social-impact initiatives.

Career pathways include:

Corporate and CSR: CSR Executive, Employee Engagement, Community Investment, Sustainability and Social Impact

Development Sector: Project Officer, Project Coordinator, Programme Manager and Development Professional

Research and Policy: Research Associate, Social Researcher, Programme Evaluation and Policy Support

Community and Social Development: Community Development, Livelihood Promotion, Social Intervention and NGO Management

Labour and Industrial Relations: Labour Welfare, Industrial Relations, Employee Welfare, and Compliance and Welfare Services

Child, Family and Rehabilitation Services: Child Welfare, Family Services, Counselling Support, Rehabilitation and Correctional Services
The programme can also serve as a foundation for further academic and professional studies.

Placement

Regular recruiters include Piramal Foundation, Tech Mahindra Foundation, SOS Children's Villages, Tata Consultancy Services, UltraTech Cement, Varun Beverages, RBL Finserv, Kaiser Consultants, CINI and HelpAge India, among others, according to the statement issued by the institute.

The institute said the MSW department consistently achieves 100% summer internship placement.

In 2025, 96% of students were placed in final placements. The reported highest CTC was ₹7 lakh, while the average CTC stood at ₹3.6 lakh and the median salary at ₹3 lakh.
