Cloudflare outage disrupts major platforms like X, ChatGPT; as company investigates unexplained traffic surge

Cloudflare, a major provider of internet infrastructure services, is experiencing a widespread outage that is disrupting access to multiple global platforms, including X, ChatGPT, and Spotify.

In a status update earlier on Tuesday, the company said it was aware of “an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers” and was investigating.

Cloudflare told USA TODAY around 8:30 a.m. EST that it had detected “a spike in unusual traffic” to one of its services at approximately 6:20 a.m. EST.

The surge caused errors affecting traffic routed through its network, the company said, adding it is working to stabilise services before focusing on the cause of the incident.

“We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic,” Cloudflare said, noting that “all hands are on deck” to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow.

Outage-tracking site Downdetector reported thousands of user complaints affecting X, Spotify, OpenAI, online gaming platforms such as League of Legends and others as of 8 a.m. EST.

Downdetector itself appeared to be impacted by the disruption.

Cloudflare said it is continuing efforts to restore affected services. No timeline for full recovery has been provided so far.
