Centre allows extra chance for UPSC exam aspirants for 2020 prelims
New Delhi/IBNS: The Centre has told the Supreme Court that it will allow an extra attempt to the UPSC aspirants who could not take their last attempt for the preliminary exam held in October 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic.
A civil service aspirant Rachana Singh filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an extra attempt in the UPSC exams for candidates who cannot take their last attempt.
The preliminary examination was postponed from May to October due to Covid-19 induced lockdown.
In September 2020, the apex court had asked the Centre and the UPSC to consider giving an extra attempt to all those who missed their last attempt in 2020 by allowing relaxation in the upper age limit.
On October 26, the Department of Personnel and Training had informed the court that the authorities were considering the issue of extra attempt to last chance candidates.
On January 22, Centre had told the court that another attempt would create a "cascading" effect and affect the level playing ground necessary for a national level examination.
A total of 4,86,952 candidates had appeared for the exam on October 4, the data shared by the Centre showed. The mains exmination for UPSC 2020 is also over. More than 10,000 candidates were shortlisted based on the marks obtained in the mains examination held from January 8-17.
