Bank details with your snacks? Viral Bhel Puri photo raises serious privacy fears

A bizarre incident has triggered widespread concern on social media after a plate of bhel puri was allegedly served wrapped in pages of a bank statement, raising serious questions about hygiene and data privacy.

The image, which went viral on X, was shared by user Sudhanshu Ambhore, who claimed that the snack purchased from a street vendor was wrapped in a two-page statement from the Union Bank of India, with visible personal and financial details.

“Bought a ₹20 bhel from a street vendor and it was wrapped in someone’s 2-page bank statement. Name, account number, transactions… everything just out there like it’s normal,” the post read, adding that privacy concerns in India were being treated casually.

The post quickly went viral, prompting strong reactions from users online. Many expressed alarm over the potential misuse of sensitive financial data, with some questioning the risk of fraud and scams if such documents fall into the wrong hands. Others criticized the apparent lack of proper document disposal practices, suggesting that confidential papers may not have been shredded before being discarded.

One user commented on the potential security risk, while another called it a clear failure of civic sense and privacy awareness. Some also reacted with shock over the hygiene aspect, pointing out the unusual and concerning use of printed financial documents in food packaging.

The incident has reignited debate around data protection, responsible document disposal, and everyday privacy practices in India.
