Gandhinagar/IBNS: Australia's Deakin has opened its campus in Gujarat becoming the first foreign university to be set up in India, media reports said.

Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, inaugurated the campus at GIFT City in Gujarat Gandhinagar district on Wednesday.

Green said in a statement as quoted by The Print, "I am so proud that the first university to establish a campus in India from anywhere in the world is Australia’s Deakin University at GIFT City.

"This opens a new chapter in Australia-India education ties, and this is only the beginning."

In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) in 2020, the University Grants Commission (UGC) notified regulations to allow foreign universities to set up campuses in India.

Deakin University, a public university in Australia's Victoria, was founded in 1974.

It was named after Australia's second Prime Minister.

In 2021, Deakin ranked among the 30 percent of universities in the world. It ranked third highest university in the world of Sport Science.
