Assam's Tyagbir Hem Baruah College hosts successful workshop on translation studies

Biswanath Chariali/Assam: Tyagbir Hem Baruah College in Jamugurihat, Assam organized a one-day workshop on "Translation Studies" under the auspices of the Department of English, on Saturday.

Dr. Ajit Hazarika, the college principal, inaugurated the event and, in his address to the students, he emphasized the importance of creative talent and translation skills, particularly in English, as a means of exploring new employment opportunities in the current scenario, The Hills Times.

Dr. Hazarika encouraged the students to be diligent and develop their translation skills, especially for translating significant Assamese literary works into English.

The workshop featured Dr. Sanjib Upadhyaya, the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation in 2021, as the resource person.

Dr. Upadhyaya shared his extensive experience in translating two important literary compositions, namely Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" and Homen Borgohain's "Pita Putra," in Nepali.

During his presentation, Dr. Upadhyaya discussed several principles that translators should keep in mind to do justice to a text. He also emphasized the need for students to respect and learn their own languages, along with widely spoken languages like English, in order to showcase the best literary achievements in their respective languages.

Additionally, he encouraged students to enrich their own languages by translating renowned works of world literature into their vernacular languages.
