Assam to form committee to implement NEP soon; schools-colleges likely to reopen from Sep 1: Edu Min Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati/IBNS: Assam government will form a 40-member high level committee to implement the new National Education Policy (NEP) in the state.

Welcoming the new National Education Policy, Assam Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said in a press conference here that the state government is going to constitute a 40-member committee under the leadership of the principal secretary of education department.

“The committee will be divided into various sub groups and it will give recommendations to implement the National Education Policy in Assam. We will quickly prepare a blueprint to implement the new education policy in Assam by December 31 this year,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

He further said that a government order will be issued for constituting the committee soon and it will start functioning within a week.

Meanwhile, the Assam government is planning to reopen the schools and colleges in the state from September 1.

“This is a preliminary assessment and the final decision will be taken on the basis of the Union government’s guidelines and the COVID-19 situation in the state. But we are planning to reopen the schools and colleges in the state from September 1,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

With the aim to provide better education facilities to the students of the tea garden areas in the state, the Assam government has decided to construct 119 high schools in 119 tea garden clusters, the Education Minister informed.

“The state government has sanctioned Rs 142.50 crore-- Rs 1.19 crore for the construction of each high school. The construction works of all 119 high schools will be started from October 2 and our target is to complete the construction works within seven months,” Sarma said.

He also said that the state government is going to appoint more than 4000 teachers on August 15.
