Wuhan university hospital in China updates guidelines on symptoms of new Coronavirus

Moscow/Sputnik/UNI:  The Wuhan University People’s Hospital in China on Friday released an updated version of their guidelines on how to identify a patient infected with the new strain of coronavirus.

The new guidance urges medical personnel and the general public to be aware of other "hidden signs" of infection that are not restricted to symptoms related to the respiratory system — flu-like symptoms such as fever and coughing are not the only indicators of the new coronavirus.

It further states that several patients had exhibited completely different symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue and nausea. Some only showed signs of headache first, while others were suffering from conjunctivitis.

The university hospital’s research team also said that early detection, isolation and treatment were vital to containing the virus.

The virus, which was first detected in Wuhan in late December, has already killed 26 and infected more than 880 others in China. Confirmed cases of the new coronavirus have also been recorded in the United States, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand. However, the World Health Organization said on Thursday that it was too early to declare a global emergency.

The Chinese authorities confirmed the first case of a young patient dying on Thursday — before, all coronavirus-related deaths were those of elderly people. The 36-year-old male was hospitalized on January 9 and passed away due to cardiac arrest.

The authorities of Wuhan restricted travel for residents and suspended public transport operations on Wednesday. Nine nearby cities in the Hubei province followed the suit the following day.
