West Bengal reports 108 new Covid cases in 24 hours, toll now 99

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal has reported 108 fresh Covid-19 cases besides 11 deaths in the last 24 hours taking the tally of total Coronavirus infections across the state to 1,786 on Saturday.

West Bengal home secretary Alapan Badyopadhyay, who has been briefing media over Covid now in place of chief secretary Rajiva Sinha for several days, stated the toll barring the co-morbid deaths is now 99 in the state.

Bandyopadhyay said 49 people were discharged from hospital in the last 24 hours taking the number of cured/discharged people to 372.

With the discharge of 372 people, the state presently is battling with 1,243 active cases.

Claiming the ramping up of the sample testing, Bandyopadhyay said 3,601 samples were tested in the last 24 hours taking the total number to 39,368.

The press briefing was held hours after Union Home Minister Amit Shah sent a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the state government of not allowing the stranded migrant workers to return to their homes in West Bengal from other parts of the country.

Though the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) shot back at the Centre rejecting Shah's claims, the home secretary preferred to stay away from the controversy.

"The central government used to send letters to the state often. I have heard from media that such a letter has been sent to the Chief Minister. But I won't comment anything since it is not the subject of my press conference," Bandyopadhyay said.

However in the course of his press briefing, Bandyopadhyay claimed chief secretary Sinha on Friday informed the central government about the state government's full support in returning the people from West Bengal who are stranded abroad.
