Kolkata/IBNS: Senior officials of West Bengal's Health and Family Welfare department on Tuesday night confirmed that an 18-year-old youth from south Kolkata, who recently returned from England, has tested positive for Covid-19, making it the first case in the state.

According to reports, the youth returned from the UK on Sunday (Mar 15) and after falling sick, he was admitted to the isolation ward of Beliaghata ID hospital with Covid-19-like syndromes on Monday (Mar 16).

"His droplet sample was sent to National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED-ICMR) in Kolkata where his sample was tested positive for novel coronavirus," a senior official of state's health department told IBNS.

"The youth is undergoing treatment in Beliaghata ID's isolation ward," the official added.

Senior health officials said that all the persons, who reportedly came closer to the youth, were being identified and quarantined.

"Father, mother and driver of the youth have been quarantined and we are searching for others who came closer to him between March 15 and 16," a health official said.

Currently, 12,226 persons with Covid-19 like symptoms are under home surveillance in the state while 248 persons have completed the surveillance period, according to officials.
