Islamabad: Pakistan is witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases as the country registered more than 2500 new instances in the past 24 hours, media reports said on Friday.

According to reports, the number of critical patients in the country has also witnessed a surge with 234 patients being treated on ventilators.

Balochistan is the only province in which there is no patient on ventilator, reports Dawn News.

The data released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) showed that 2,547 people tested Covid-19 positive and 18 lost their lives due to the disease in a single day, reports the Pakistani newspaper.

Pakistan had last witnessed over 2,500 cases on July 11. However, cases were declining since then.

An official of the National Institute of Health said it was expected that the number of cases would increase during the winter season.

“Virus of influenza becomes more active during winters. Moreover, the number of Covid-19 cases had decreased due to rains as coronavirus becomes heavy in humid atmosphere and immediately drops on the land. However, during winter, due to less humidity, it remains stagnant in the air for more time,” he told Dawn News.

There are 32005 active COVID-19 cases in the country at present.

The death toll due to the highly infectious disease, which is believed to have originated from China, stands at 7248.

Meanwhile, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi has died on Thursday.

The TLP leader was suffering from fever since the past few days, confirmed family sources and had complained about the fever as he led a protest at the Faizabad Interchange a few days ago, reports Geo News.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan tweeted: "On the passing of Maulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi my condolences go to his family. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un."
