Narayana Health founder receives the Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite for extending medical and logistical support to the French community in Bengaluru during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Renowned cardiac surgeon and Narayana Health founder Dr Devi Shetty has been conferred with one of France's highest civilian honours in recognition of his support to the French community in Bengaluru during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Consulate General of France in Bengaluru presented Dr Shetty with the Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite (Knight of the National Order of Merit) on Thursday, acknowledging his contribution during a period of unprecedented health challenges.

According to a statement issued by Narayana Health, the honour recognises Dr Shetty's generosity, accessibility and commitment to assisting French nationals living in Bengaluru during the pandemic.

How Dr Shetty helped the French community

During the Covid-19 crisis, Dr Shetty and Narayana Health extended assistance to the French Consulate and members of the wider French community through vaccination programmes and logistical support.

The hospital group said the initiative reflected an exceptional spirit of cooperation and solidarity at a time when communities across the world were struggling with the pandemic.

Marc Lamy, Consul General of France in Bengaluru, said the recognition celebrated Dr Shetty's generosity and continued support to French nationals in the city.

He added that the surgeon's efforts reflected the spirit of solidarity and the longstanding friendship between France and India.

What is France's National Order Of Merit?

Established on December 3, 1963, by then French President Charles de Gaulle, the Ordre national du Mérite is one of France's two national orders of distinction.

It ranks second only to the Legion of Honour in the country's hierarchy of national honours.

The distinction recognises outstanding service and contributions by French citizens as well as foreign nationals across civilian and military fields, covering both public and private sectors.

The Order has five grades: Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer and Grand Cross.

'Honoured to receive this recognition,' says Dr Shetty

Reacting to the honour, Dr Shetty expressed gratitude to the French government and recalled the efforts made to assist the French community during the pandemic.

He said the hospital was glad to extend help during a difficult period when mutual support and solidarity were particularly important.

Dr Shetty also acknowledged the contribution of Narayana Health's medical and support teams, crediting them for making the assistance possible.
