Bhopal/IBNS: Covid patients being infected with mucormycosis or "black fungal disease" have been increasing and fifty more infected patients in Madhya Pradesh have been diagnosed with the rare infection caused by a group of moulds called "mucormycetes" and affect people with weak immune systems.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has termed the development a huge concern for the state government.

"Cases of black fungus infection are emerging which are very horrific. They are a cause for concern. So far, 50 cases have been confirmed," Chouhan said, reported NDTV.

Over 200 cases of Black Fungus have been reported across India, according to a Times of India report. The infection is found mostly in people who have recovered or are recovering from Covid-19 .

An ill patient may inhale the moulds present in the air which may then enter the sinus cavities, lungs, chest cavities and brain, causing complications.

Symptoms of the infection included headache, fever, pain under the eyes, nasal or sinus congestion and partial loss of vision. Facial deformity is a charecteristic feature when the disease spreads in the body.

Chauhan said his government will issue a detailed protocol for the treatment of the diseases and fully fund the treatment of the weaker sections.

"We need to be alert at the outset about the cause, symptoms, treatment and prevention of the condition," said the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, the NDTV report stated.

The Central government has said it is working with the drug manufacturers to  develop an ant-fungal drug to treat mucormycosis.
