New Delhi/IBNS: The Covid-19 tally in India on Saturday crossed the 78-lakh mark with the reporting of over 53,000 fresh infections in the last 24 hours.

In 24 hours between Friday and Saturday mornings, the country has reported 53,370 cases while 650 people, who were infected with the virus, died in the same period.

The Covid-19 toll has thus touched 1,17,956.

The Novel Coronavirus daily cases have  steadily declined in the last few weeks after peaking to over 90,000 amid a prevailing fear of a possible surge in infections in some parts of the country due to the festive season.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday during his address to West Bengal, which is witnessing a low-key Durga Puja festival this year amid pandemic, asked people to maintain all Covid-19 protocols like social distancing and wearing masks.
