India's COVID-19 cases near 50000- mark, death toll touches 1694

New Delhi/IBNS: India is approaching the 50000 COVID-19 mark as the death tally due to the disease touched 1694, as per the Ministry of Health data released on Wednesday.

The number of COVID-19 cases registered in the country stands at 49391.

There are 33514 active cases in India at present.

So far, 14182 have been discharged from hospital.

The Telangana government has extended the lockdown to combat the spread of Coronavirus till May 29, 10 days after it is scheduled to end nationwide.

"People want lockdown extended," Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced after holding a 7-hour-long cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening.

"I informed the Prime Minister about our decision," the Chief Minister said.

However, the state government will review matters of relaxations after May 15.

Telangana so far has 1,096 cases of coronavirus. Out of this, 439 people are under treatment and 628 have been discharged.
