New Delhi/IBNS: India has witnessed a massive surge in Novel Coronavirus cases in the last week as the Covid-19 tally is racing towards the 53,000 mark with over 1,700 deaths.

As per the Ministry of Home and Family Welfare, 52,952 people across the country have been infected with the pandemic virus while 15,267 of them have recovered or migrated or been discharged.

Maharashtra, the state where the financial capital Mumbai is located, still tops the list of Covid cases as 16,758 people have been infected with the respiratory disease in the region.

Gujarat, the neighbouring state of Maharashtra, has recorded 6,625 cases followed by the national capital Delhi (5,532).

Though 1,783 deaths have been reported so far, the central government interestingly claimed more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidity.

While India is registering a steep, unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases, the country is in the last leg of the lockdown which is due to end on May 18.

Though the central government is planning a staggered exit from the lockdown, Telangana became the first state to extend the restrictions till May 29.

However, several industries, standalone shops, wine shops have been relaxed in the green and orange zones where no or less number of Covid cases are reported.
