CMRI Kolkata introduces SmartNav Cochlear Implant Technology for first time in East India

Cochlear implant surgery has taken a major technological leap forward, with CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI Kolkata, becoming the first in Eastern India to integrate Smart Nav technology in cochlear implantation.

According to Dr. NVK Mohan, Senior Consultant Otologist & Cochlear Implant Surgeon, this innovative system enhances surgical precision, improves patient outcomes, and reduces anesthesia time by eliminating the need for intraoperative X-rays.

Traditionally, surgeons rely on post-surgical X-rays to confirm electrode placement within the cochlea, but SmartNav allows real-time monitoring, providing instant feedback on electrode insertion depth and positioning.

By offering continuous intraoperative data, SmartNav technology ensures optimal placement of the electrode while preventing complications such as kinking or improper insertion, which could impact hearing performance.

It also allows surgeons to measure nerve response (Auto-NRT) in real time, ensuring that the maximum number of auditory nerves are stimulated.

This advanced system enables a more precise and controlled insertion process, reducing the risk of trauma to the delicate cochlear structures.

The doctor said a key benefit of this technology is that it eliminates the need for an intraoperative X-ray, saving crucial anesthesia time and enabling surgeons to make immediate adjustments during the procedure.

Recently, Dr. Mohan and his team achieved a 'milestone' by completing a 480-degree cochlear electrode placement, ensuring optimal nerve stimulation and improved hearing outcomes for the patient.

"This technological advancement marks a new era in cochlear implant surgery, combining AI-driven precision, real-time feedback, and enhanced patient safety. We would love to offer you an exclusive story on how SmartNav is revolutionizing cochlear implantation and its future potential in ENT and hearing restoration surgery," Mohan said.
