Sao Paolo, Aug 24 (IBNS): Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro has directed the country's armed forces to tackle the forest fires which is burning Amazon, media reports said.

The fires have triggered worldwide protest.

President Jair Bolsonaro deployed soldiers in nature reserves, indigenous lands, and border areas beset by fires, BBC reported.

French President Emmanuel Macron this week urged world leaders to discuss the issue of Amazon fire in the G7 Summit.

Macron tweeted, "Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain forest - the lungs which produces 20% of our planet’s oxygen - is on fire. It is an international crisis. Members of the G7 Summit, let's discuss this emergency first order in two days!."

Many of the fires are thought to have been started deliberately, with suspicion falling on farmers who may benefit by having more available land. Bolsonaro has scorned environmental activists and declared staunch support for the clearing of areas of the Amazon for agriculture and mining, reported BBC.

Amazon, which is the largest rainforest in the world, is considered as a vital carbon store that slows down the pace of global warming.

The forest is considered as a home to about three million species of plants and animals.

It houses one million indigenous people.
