With Tesla evaluating manufacturing in India, Tata’s role is set to grow. (Image credit: wikipedia.org)

Mumbai: The Tata Group has quietly emerged as a global supplier to Elon Musk's Tesla, the world’s most valuable electric vehicle (EV) company, according to a report by The Economic Times (ET).

Several Tata companies, including Tata AutoComp, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Technologies, and Tata Electronics, are now integrated into Tesla’s supply chain, providing critical components and services.

These firms have signed global agreements with Tesla and are expected to expand their role, particularly if Tesla establishes a manufacturing facility in India.

Tesla’s growing sourcing from India

According to ET, Tesla’s senior procurement officials have been engaging with Indian suppliers to source key components such as:

  • Castings and forgings
  • Electronics
  • Fabrication parts

A source cited in the report stated, "Tesla is, in a way, readying the supplier base in India. We are confident that once Tesla starts manufacturing here, Indian suppliers will see increased sourcing opportunities."

In FY24, Indian suppliers contributed nearly $2 billion worth of components to Tesla. As the automaker seeks to diversify its EV supply chain, sourcing from India is likely to rise.

Tesla’s India manufacturing plans

Tesla has been evaluating India as a potential manufacturing hub but is awaiting clarity on government incentives, tax benefits, and duty waivers before making a final decision.

While Tesla has not confirmed its India factory plans, it has reportedly been in discussions with several states, including:

  • Rajasthan
  • Gujarat
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Maharashtra
  • Telangana

If Tesla moves ahead with production in India, Tata’s role in its supply chain could expand significantly.

What Tata Group companies are supplying to Tesla

Different Tata Group companies are supplying specialized products and services to Tesla:

Tata AutoComp – Engineering products for EVs.
Tata Technologies – End-to-end product lifecycle management.
TCS – Circuit-board technologies.
Tata Electronics – Expected to supply semiconductor chips once its local plant becomes operational.

Tesla may also collaborate with Tata Electronics for printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA), crucial for battery management systems, motor controller units, and door control mechanisms.
