Stock market: Sensex down over 200 pts

Mumbai/UNI: BSE Sensex on Wednesday nosedived 268 pts to 54,286.63 as profit booking by local operators amid selling across the board.

The Nifty too fell by 72.45 pts at 16,207.65.

With yesterday's all-time high, the Sensex tumbled down as profit booking was witnessed in early trade.

The Sensex registered intra-day high and low at 54,758.74 and 54,265.71 pts respectively.

The Nifty registered intra-day high and low at 16,338.75 and 16,191.40 pts respectively.

The Mid Cap fell by 1.90 pc and the Small Cap by 2.97 pc.

In 30 scrips, 8 advanced while 22 declined.

The losers were Bajaj Auto by 2.50 pc to Rs 3702.30, Sun Pharma by 2.05 pc to Rs 777.15, Bajaj finance by 1.42 pc to Rs 6080.20, Kotak Bank by 1.24 pc to Rs 1790.35 and Dr Reddy's Lab by 1.23 pc to Rs 4712.30.

The gainers were Powergrid by 2.32 pc to Rs 176.15, NTPC by 1.62 pc to Rs 116.10, Tata Steel by 1.20 pc to Rs 1390 and HCL Technology by 1.02 pc to Rs 1074.50.
