Special grade structurals from SAIL's Bhilai Steel Plant to give armed forces strong foothold in hostile climatic conditions
The first lot of around 425 tonnes of the special grade IS 2062 E410 Grade C steel channel was flagged off from Bhilai Steel Plant’s Merchant Mill by PR Deshmukh, General Manager In-charge (Works), on Sept 29 in presence of senior officials of the Plant’s Quality Dept, Steel Melting Shop-I, Blooming & Billet Mill, Merchant Mill and other associated departments.
Initially sceptical about accepting this order owing to lack of previous experience and also due to inherent extreme difficulty in manufacturing this special grade IS 2062 E410 Grade C (Killed) steel through SMS I route, with Impact Testing requirement at subzero temperature (– 20 °C), Plant officials took up the challenge under the leadership of CEO, Shri M Ravi, himself a steel man with decades of experience of working in SMS 1 and Shri PR Deshmukh, GM I/c Works.
Deliberations for meticulous planning, execution and monitoring took place between teams from concerned departments of the Plant including Research & Control Lab (RCL), Steel Melting Shop-I, Blooming & Billet Mill, Merchant Mill as well as other associated departments including Marketing, PPC, Finance, C&IT and SAIL’s marketing wing, CMO.
A protocol was made and dedicated efforts that went into execution and close monitoring of each activity culminated into successful rolling in the Plant’s Merchant Mill and final dispatch of the first consignment of this special grade of structurals.
This first consignment of special grade structural steel goes from Bhilai Steel Plant to Bokaro Stockyard from where the material would subsequently be sent for ground applications in high altitude areas of Leh giving our armed forces a strong foothold in hostile climatic conditions.
It is worth mentioning that SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant has been supplying specially toughened warship grade steel plates for Indian Navy for many years.
The DMR 249 A grade plates rolled out in Bhilai’s Plate Mill have been used in construction of India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
The special steel plates are also being used in construction of other warships that are being indigenously built for Indian Navy in different shipyards of the country. The Plant has also supplied structural steel being used by the Army for border fencing.
