JSW Infra bags ₹740 cr project to boost container capacity at Kolkata port

Kolkata: JSW Infrastructure secured a ₹740 crore project from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority to enhance the port’s container handling capacity, according to a company release on Monday.

The project, awarded on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) basis under the PPP model, is for the reconstruction of berth 8 and mechanisation of berths 7 and 8 at Netaji Subhas Dock.

The project comes with a 30-year concession period and aligns with JSW Infrastructure’s strategy to expand its terminal portfolio under the government’s port privatisation initiative, stated the release.

With the construction timeline of two years, the company will also be able to commence operations during the construction phase, leveraging Kolkata's steady cargo volumes.

Post-completion, the project is expected to significantly enhance both capacity and operational efficiency, the release noted.

According to JSW Infrastructure, the development would be a key milestone in diversifying its cargo portfolio through targeted investments in the container segment.

The invest in Kolkata port would strengthen its container operations across the eastern and western coasts, it added.

On the west coast, JSW Infrastructure operates the New Mangalore Container Terminal with a current capacity of 0.2 million TEUs, which is being expanded to 0.35 million TEUs.

The Kolkata project would bring the company’s total container handling capacity close to 1 million TEUs.
