Dhaka: Consignments of green chillies have started arriving from India through Bhomra land port in Satkhira. Indian green chillies will be available in the Bangladesh market from July 3, sources said on Sunday.

A total of 60 metric tonnes of green chillies in six trucks -- 10 tonnes each -- arrived in the country around 11:30 am on Sunday, after the end of the holidays marking Eid-ul-Azha.

Bhomra customs supervisor Ifthekaruddin said several trucks of green chillies arrived in the country today morning.

More trucks with the consignment of chillies will enter the country steadily. It will take time.

The price of green chilli in the country’s market was raised abnormally several days before the Eid-ul-Azha.

On 25 June, the government allowed importing this kitchen ingredient in a bid to decrease its skyrocketing price.

Bhomra C&F agent association general secretary ASM Maqsud Khan said six trucks of green chilli entered today. Several more will arrive in the evening. Due to the imports, the price of green chillies will reduce in the local market.

General secretary of the Kitchen Market Traders Association in Satkhira, Abdur Rahim, said the green chilli is now being sold at Tk 400 to Tk 500 per kg in Satkhira’s market.

Since the consignments of green chilli have arrived, the price has started falling. It will drop to Tk 50 and Tk 60 per kg within one or two days.

It is to be noted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a recent press conference spoke about the conservation of green chillies in Bangladesh.

From the day after her speech, green chilli disappeared from the market in Bangladesh and the price went beyond the reach of the common man. A turbulent situation is created in the market across the country.

For the past few days, green chillies have been sold in the market for 600 to 1000 BDT. In view of which Bangladesh decided to import green chillies from India.
