Govt to extend free import policy for laptops, tablets, and computers

New Delhi: The Indian government is considering an extension of the free import policy for laptops, tablets, and computers until September 30, 2024, Moneycontrol reported.

Currently, importers are required to register their organization and import data through an online portal called the Import Management System, which is currently under development by the government.

After September 30, 2024, the government plans to reassess authorization norms and gradually decrease the import quota for finished products.

There may also be exceptions made on a case-by-case basis, and it is anticipated that the government might introduce a standard operating procedure for this matter.

Following the Union Commerce Ministry's announcement on August 4 imposing restrictions on the import of laptops, PCs, tablets, and related items, the industry has been urging for relaxation.

The ministry stipulated that computer manufacturers would need a valid license and be subject to duties for importing PCs, laptops, tablets, and servers.

This development follows consultations held by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) with representatives from the laptop, PC, and tablet industry on August 22.
