Govt increases highway building target to 14,000 km from 12,500 km for FY24
New Delhi: The Central government is contemplating raising the target for highway development in the ongoing year after accelerated progress in road construction during the initial quarter of the financial year 2023-24 (FY24), Moneycontrol reported.
He further mentioned that out of the total target of 14,000 km, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been assigned the task of constructing 6,000 km of roads, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) will undertake the construction of another 6,000 km, and the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) will be responsible for building an additional 2,000 km of roads.
According to data provided by MoRTH, the pace of road construction in India witnessed a year-on-year increase of 9.4 percent during the first quarter of the current financial year.
Approximately 2,150 km of roads were constructed between April and June, surpassing the 1,966 km built during the same period last year.
May and June witnessed a significant acceleration in the pace of road construction, compensating for the slow start observed in April and contributing to the overall progress during the quarter, the report said.
According to senior officials from MoRTH, the early onset of monsoon in certain regions affected the speed of road construction. They mentioned that if not for the rains, the progress would have been even more substantial, said the report.
Furthermore, officials stated that the government aims to enhance road construction activities in Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh as part of its expanded target for road construction in the fiscal year 2023-24, it said.
