Embraer sets up India subsidiary, in talks with IndiGo and Air India to sell aircraft: Report
New Delhi: Brazilian aerospace major Embraer is engaging with Indian carriers IndiGo and Air India to explore potential aircraft sales, as part of its broader strategy to deepen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
A company official confirmed to news agency PTI on Monday that Embraer has established a fully-owned subsidiary in India, with its corporate office located in New Delhi.
The Brazilian firm, which manufactures commercial, business, and military aircraft, is also setting up a dedicated procurement team to tap into India’s supply chain.
This includes plans to explore sourcing components and services locally, Embraer’s representative, Neto, said in an exclusive interview with PTI.
Recruitment is currently underway across several departments, including government relations, communications, procurement, engineering, sales, and marketing.
Embraer already has around 50 aircraft operating in India across 11 models that span commercial aviation, business jets, and defence platforms.
“India is the third-largest market in aviation globally... we see a lot of opportunities for us in the future in this market for all the products we have, the different business units, commercial jets, business jets, military aircraft and eVTOLs. That's why we want to really deepen our collaboration with the country and this step of opening a subsidiary in India,” Neto said.
On the private aviation front, Neto noted that with the right regulatory adjustments, the segment could open up further.
He is currently in New Delhi attending the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting.
Neto added that while trade between India and Brazil remains modest at present, there is significant growth potential.
“We see a lot of opportunities,” he said, citing the long-standing ties between the two nations and their participation in the BRICS bloc. “We expect that the global south will increase the collaboration... increase the trade between the countries.”
Embraer recorded its highest-ever revenues in 2024, with the United States currently serving as its largest market.
Meanwhile, Indian carriers are also in expansion mode.
On Sunday, IndiGo announced it would firm up its order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, building on its April 2023 order for 30 A350s with options for 70 more.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers confirmed the move at a press briefing in New Delhi. The airline now has more than 900 aircraft on order for future deliveries.
Air India, now owned by the Tata Group, is also in active negotiations with Boeing and Airbus for another significant order, Reuters reported. The airline is considering acquiring around 200 more narrow-body jets, in addition to the record 470-aircraft deal it signed last year.
