New Delhi: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said the government has given its nod to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for setting up a greenfield airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan, entailing an investment of Rs 1,507 crore.

The facility will be able to handle up to 20 lakh passengers annually.

The Rajasthan government has already handed over 440.06 hectares of land to AAI for the project, designed to accommodate A-321 type aircraft.

The existing airport in Kota can only take small aircraft, and expansion for commercial services is not feasible due to limited land availability and urbanisation around it.

The new site is about 23 km away from the current facility.

As per the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the upcoming airport will include a 20,000 sqm terminal building capable of handling 1,000 peak-hour passengers, with an overall annual capacity of 2 million passengers.

“Kota is an industrial and educational hub. People from the education sector regularly visit Kota. The demand for an airport has been long overdue, and there is a natural ecosystem between Bundi and Kota. The existing airport is old and in need of modernisation,” Vaishnaw said.

The government release said Kota’s role in both education and industry makes the greenfield airport a vital infrastructure project, designed to meet the region’s growing traffic demand.

The Union Cabinet also approved construction of a six-lane ring road encircling Cuttack and Bhubaneswar in Odisha, involving an investment of Rs 8,307 crore.

According to PIB, “The project will provide significant benefit to Odisha and other eastern States by diverting heavy commercial traffic away from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Khordha Cities. This will enhance the efficiency of freight movement, reducing logistics cost and driving socio-economic growth in the region.”

The proposed highway will extend 110 km, with civil works alone costing Rs 4,686.74 crore, in addition to Rs 1,029.43 crore earmarked for land acquisition.

It is expected to generate nearly 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
