Kolkata, Sept 14 (IBNS): Asia's oldest chamber, The Bengal Chamber of Commerce, held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday at its premises on Netaji Subhas Road.

The Special Plenary Session was addressed by Amit Mitra, Minister-in-Charge, Commerce & Industries, Finance & Excise, Industrial Reconstruction & Public Enterprise, Govt. of West Bengal.

The AGM will also be attended by Craig Hall, Consul General, US Consulate Kolkata.

“As Asia’s oldest chamber, we work together with multiple stakeholders like industry, academia, professionals and governments, to achieve significant growth and employment generation not only for West Bengal, but many other regions in the country. We act as catalyst, initiator, facilitator, business partner and service provider, towards our larger objective of driving economic growth,” said Ambarish Dasgupta, President, The Bengal Chamber.

“On the occasion of the AGM, the Chamber is launching a special book “Extraordinary Personalities From Bengal: A Tribute By The Bengal Chamber”, which illustrates the contribution of twelve national heroes from Bengal in the field of arts and literature, science, to bring revolutionary changes in Indian society, education, and selflessness to achieve independence and shape India," said Sutanu Ghosh, President Designate of the Chamber.

"The book features luminaries like Raja Rammohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Swami Vivekananda, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Chittaranjan Das, Rabindranath Tagore, among others,” Ghosh said.

“The AGM will also feature an awards programme for ‘Bengal Entrepreneurship Recognition 2016’, organised by the Chamber. Different achievers who have made significant contribution in the categories of startup, manufacturing and services, will be felicitated for making their mark on the map of entrepreneurs,” said Subhodip Ghosh, Director General of The Bengal Chamber.

The Chamber also inaugurated its permanent exhibition “The Calcutta Gallery” - a pictorial journey down the lane of business and industrial history of Calcutta.

The journey starts from the time of arrival of Job Charnock in the year 1690, and covers the establishment of the East India Company’s business, the setting up of Writers’ Buildings, modernisation of Calcutta, construction of railways, Bengal’s intellectual awakening, and much more.

“The Calcutta Gallery portrays 325 years in the glorious history of the city through an incredibly rare collection of photographs. The picture gallery also has an audio-visual kiosk,” said Ambarish Dasgupta, the Chamber President.
