Adani Ports gets big relief as Supreme Court suspends Gujarat HC's order on 108 hectares land near Mundra Port
New Delhi: Adani Ports received a big relief as the Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended a Gujarat High Court order that directed the state government to reclaim 108 hectares of grazing land granted to the ports company, media reported.
This land is located near Mundra port in Kachchh district.
The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Gujarat government regarding this matter, reported NDTV.
The issue originates from 2005 when 108 hectares were initially allotted to Adani Ports.
In 2010, when Adani Ports & SEZ began fencing the land, residents of Navinal village filed a Public Interest Litigation, challenging the allocation of 231 hectares of grazing land to Adani Ports, according to the report.
They argued that the village faced a shortage of grazing land, which would leave them with only 45 acres.
In 2014, the court dismissed the case after the state government assured that an order had been issued granting 387 hectares of government land for grazing.
When this did not occur, a contempt petition was filed.
In 2015, the state government filed a review petition, informing the court that only 17 hectares were available for allocation to the village panchayat and proposed allocating the remaining land about 7 km away, according to the report.
The villagers rejected this proposal, stating it was too far for cattle to graze.
In April this year, the court directed a senior revenue official to find a solution.
The official reported that the state government had decided to reclaim nearly 108 hectares (266 acres) of land allotted to Adani Ports in 2005, the report said.
The revenue department indicated that the state would "replenish" the villagers by adding government land to the area reclaimed from Adani Ports.
The High Court then directed the state government to implement this plan.
