Green Hydrogen India in discussions to supply green hydrogen to European Union, Singapore: Report
New Delhi: India is in discussions regarding a potential agreement to supply over 11 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually to the European Union and Singapore, Reuters reported citing three government officials and one industry source.
These countries would make investments in clean energy projects within India in return for the supply.
According to the Reuters report, New Delhi is considering bilateral agreements that would enable countries to utilize carbon credits associated with the production of green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources.
Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy, making it environmentally friendly.
The discussions reflect India's commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives and exploring opportunities for collaboration with international partners in the field of sustainable hydrogen production.
During a meeting in New Delhi, officials revealed that India and the European Union (EU) have explored potential agreements for green hydrogen, with a proposed volume of 10 million metric tons per year, said the report.
Under these agreements, businesses from the EU would have the opportunity to invest in projects in India and claim carbon credits.
However, specific details regarding the duration and commencement of these contracts were not provided by the officials.
Singapore is reportedly seeking to secure 5 million metric tons per year of green ammonia through similar bilateral agreements.
This volume is equivalent to an additional 1-1.5 million metric tons per year of green hydrogen, as per another official.
Green ammonia, a derivative of green hydrogen, is the form the fuel is transported.
Since the discussions are still in progress, none of the officials involved were willing to disclose their identities.
Requests for comment from India's renewable energy ministry, an Indian government spokesperson, and a communications officer at the EU office in New Delhi did not receive an immediate response.
In pursuit of its goal to become a prominent green hydrogen exporter, India approved a substantial incentive plan worth 174.9 billion rupees ($2.13 billion) last year.
The plan aims to support the production of green hydrogen and sets a target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by the year 2030.
This initiative demonstrates India's commitment to fostering the growth of the green hydrogen industry and establishing itself as a key player in the global hydrogen market.
