Biswa Bangla, the flagship brand of Bengal under the aegis of the MSME &T (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises & Textiles) department of the West Bengal government has joined hands with Heritage Bengal Global (HBG), a non-profit organization run by the Bengali diaspora in the UK, to launch its first export venture nearly a decade after it was first launched.

This Bengali new year, ‘Brand Bengal’ takes a leap forward to launch its most popular brand in the United Kingdom, to fulfill a long pending dream of the government.

Biswa Bangla Marketing Corporation Limited (BBMC) took this initiative to promote Biswa Bangla (BB) to the world, with its traditional handloom products like baluchari, jamdani, garad, muslin, Bengal silk, kantha stich and other legacy like ‘tant’ produces along with handicrafts and heritage produces like Darjeeling makaibari tea, Chitpore’s attar, natural honey from Sunderbans and the hills.

Heritage Bengal Global will put up an exclusive stall to display varieties of BB’s handloom products at their Bengali New Year event on April 22 at Salvatorian College Harrow, London, and promote traditional and ethnic fabric collections of Bengal with western designs to popularise the same amongst the locals, apart from the vast Indian population across the UK.

The Mayor of Harrow, Janet Mote, will inaugurate the Naboborsho Mela (Bengali New Year’s event) on the same day.

HBG Director, Anirban Mukhopadhyay reiterated the euphoria and said, ”We are proud to associate with Biswa Bangla and represent Brand Bengal in U.K. It would be our endeavour to take the brand globally through our bigger initiative of Durga Puja later this year.”

The Project Director of HBG in Kolkata, Debashis Ghosh who was with Biswa Bangla during its inception days as a project manager with MSME&T and this time coordinated with BBMC team said, “Feeling ecstatic and immensely proud to be able to fulfil a decade old dream to take Biswa Bangla to UK.”

Vice-President of HBG Mahua Bej, who along with other members namely Ramita Ghosh, Yashmita Choudhury, Tamalika Basu, Chandrayee Roychoudhury, and others have been toiling hard to organise the event with grandeur, particularly with the addition of Biswa Bangla promotion and screening of Bengali movie ‘Ghare Pherar Gaan’ starring Tollywood star Paramabrata Chatterjee.

“This Poila Baisakh we are excited to bring Biswa Bangla to the UK and add more heritage flavours to our event. Hope the traditional Bengali new year celebration with ‘Bangalir adda and bhoj’ will get more fervour with the cinema screening, novelty stalls and kids zone for wholesome family entertainment.” Mahua said.

HBG also plans to launch their 6th edition of IFAShield-UK community football tournament with fans of Big Three football clubs of Kolkata playing this year and unveiling their mega plans for Thames Durga Parade later this year.
