Those involved in Hefazat violence will be punished: Bangladesh home minister
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that the members of Hefazat-e-Islam, a radical Islamist group, responsible for recent violent incidents in the country would be punished, reported Dhaka Tribune.
The remark came after the government started talks with the group. Kamal claimed people who were involved in violence will be brought to book.
"People involved in arson, vandalism, must be brought be punished," he added.
The government was not making random arrests, he claimed. Agencies are taking action based on the video footage of the violence.
Various agencies of the country are currently probing people who had instigated violence during and after the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Islamist group has already dissolved its core committee as differences emerged within the group.
A report in the Daily Star claimed that intelligence agencies of the country have found evidence of the involvement of members of various banned organizations in the group. Some of them were holding official positions in the Hefezat’s central committee.
The report also suggests the involvement of people who had returned from Afghanistan.
