Pakistani police have launched a fresh investigation into the 2021 disappearance of nine-year-old Hindu girl Priya Kumari following renewed calls for her recovery, according to media reports.

The development emerged on Thursday during a briefing by senior Sindh Police officials to a meeting of the Minority Caucus—a bipartisan legislative forum established to safeguard the constitutional rights of non-Muslim communities, Dawn reported.

The meeting, chaired by Senator Danesh Kumar at the Sindh Chief Secretary's office, reviewed several issues concerning minority welfare, including an updated briefing on the status and progress of the investigation into Priya Kumari's alleged kidnapping.

According to the report, police officials informed the meeting that a fresh inquiry had been initiated and that all possible efforts were being made to ensure the girl's early and safe recovery.

Priya Kumari went missing in August 2021 while serving free cold drinks at a sabeel during Ashura in Sangrar town near Sukkur. Her disappearance sparked widespread concern among Pakistan's Hindu community and human rights groups.

The meeting was also briefed on law and order and crime-control operations in Ghouskot village, with discussions focusing on their impact on minority communities and the police response in the area.
