Nepal PM Oli loses confidence vote, expected to resign
Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday lost the vote of confidence in parliament, reported the Himalayan Times. Oli managed to get just 93 votes instead of 117 what was needed to save his government. Oli will now have to submit his resignation to President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
Twenty lawmakers of the dissenting faction within Oli’s CPN-UML led by former prime minister Madhav Nepal didn’t attend the session. Other parties like Nepali Congress and CPN-MC against the motion.
A total of 124 votes were cast against the motion. Earlier this morning, Oli made a last-ditch effort to save his government, calling disgruntled leaders of the party to show unity. Oli, speaking on the motion, recounted the achievements of his government.
The members of the Janta Samwadi Party, however, remained neutral during the voting.
The political instability in the Himalayan country comes at a time when the country has been grappling with the second wave of deadly coronavirus.
President Bhandari is now expected to ask parliament to explore the possibility of forming an alternate government. In case opposition parties fail to form a consensus on future government formation, the president, according to the rule, would again ask Oli, as the leader of the biggest party in parliament, to form the government.
