World Cup 2026: Zee bags broadcast rights, but is free viewing still possible in India?

Although the Indian national team has not qualified for the tournament, World Cup fever has swept across the country, where football continues to steadily grow alongside its deep-rooted cricket culture.

For a considerable time, the tournament’s broadcast availability in India remained uncertain. However, the situation was clarified just days before the start of the event when Zee Entertainment was confirmed as the official broadcaster in the country.

Under this agreement, Zee has secured rights to broadcast 39 FIFA events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026 and FIFA World Cup 2030.

The company will air and stream these tournaments in India over the next eight years through its sports channels and the OTT platform Zee5.

The deal significantly strengthens Zee’s sports portfolio while tapping into India’s expanding football audience.

Zee5 has introduced subscription plans for viewers, priced at ₹799 for three months and ₹1,699 for a one-year package, offering access to live coverage and streaming of matches.

Where can you watch the matches for free?

Viewers without a subscription can still catch select matches on the national broadcaster DD Sports. Along with the opening clash between Mexico and South Africa on June 11, DD Sports will also broadcast key knockout fixtures, including the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and the final.

The semi-finals are scheduled for July 14 and 15, while the final will take place on July 19.
