National level bridge tournament to be held in Kolkata

Kolkata, Apr 17 (IBNS):  Big time Bridge championship is back in Kolkata again as  All India Shree Cement Bridge Tournament, a four- day competition, will be held in the city during Apr 19 to 22 next.

The championship has assumed a greater importance as the winners  in this event  will be eligible for  trials to be selected for India for  the forthcoming Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia  later this year.

The sport has been included as a competitive event in Asian Games this time.

A total of about five hundred  players  including almost all the leading players of the country and neighbouring Bangladesh   will   take part in this  event which is being sponsored by Shree Cement and organized by  West  Bengal Bridge Association under the aegis of Bridge Federation of India  at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Rajarhat .

The competition will  be held  for Team and Pair events  where a  total Prize money of  Rs. 4 lakhs  will be at stake. The winners  of the team event will also  get a direct entry into the Selection trial of Indian Team for Bermuda Bowl, known as the  World Cup for the Bridge in 2019.

Accordingly all probable representatives of Indian teams will be participating in this tournament. Leading International and National Champions like Jaggy Shivdasani, Sumit Mukherjee, Debabrata Majumder, Rajeswar Tiwari, Kiran Nadar, Pranab Bardhan, S.N. De Sarkar, P. Sridhar, S. Sunderam and Subhas Gupta will be seen in action here. Beside other notable veterans like  Kamal Mukherjee, Subir Majumder, Manash Mukherjee, Swarnendu Banerjee and Kaustav Nundy  will also go all out here for the top honours.

Though there would not be any separate event for the ladies, top women players led by international Kiran Nadar  will join this championship   where  Manju Moitra and Kalpana Mishra  will throw the local challenge.

The tournament will be inaugurated by  West Bengal Minster of State for Sports Laxmi Ratan Shukla in the morning of  April 19 at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. (EOM).
