Sydney, May 4 (IBNS): Former Australian captain Steve Smith, who is currently facing a 12-month ban from international cricket due to his involvement in ball-tampering episode during a Test match against South Africa, has vowed to earn back the trust of his countrymen.

"It’s great to be back home in Australia. I have had some time away to come to terms with everything and now it’s time to get back into it," Steve Smith wrote in an emotional Instagram post.

"The amount of emails and letters I have received has been incredible and I have been extremely humbled by the enormous amount of support you have given me," he said.

He thanked his family for their support during this moment of crisis in his life following the suspension in the ball-tampering episode.

"I now have a lot to do to earn back your trust. To my Mum, Dad and Dani you have been my rock through this and I can’t thank you enough. Family is the most important thing in the world and I thank you for your love and support," he said.

Prior to CA's ban, Smith was banned for a Test by ICC after the entire ball tampering episode came to light during the third Test match against South Africa.

Smith and David Warner, his deputy, were handed 12 months ban from playing international cricket by the Australian cricket board.

Cameron Bancroft, who was caught red-handed during the act, has been suspended by CA from all forms of cricket for nine months.
