Mithun Chakraborty hospitalised after minor surgery, Suvendu Adhikari says 'he is recovering well'
Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata, where he is recovering after undergoing a minor surgical procedure.
The actor is said to be in stable condition and is expected to be discharged soon.
News of his hospitalisation came to light after West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari visited him on Friday and shared details of the meeting on social media.
Suvendu Adhikari visits actor in hospital
Adhikari met Mithun Chakraborty at the Kolkata hospital and interacted with the doctors overseeing his treatment.
He later shared photographs showing the veteran actor resting in his hospital room following the procedure.
In a Facebook post, Adhikari wrote that he had enquired about Mithun Chakraborty's health and prayed for his speedy recovery.
"Renowned film actor and one of the members of the Central Committee of BJP, Mithun Chakraborty, is admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata due to physical illness. I went to the hospital to meet him today. I spoke to him and took information about his physical condition. I pray to the merciful God for his speedy recovery," he wrote.
The photographs quickly went viral on social media, prompting concern among the actor's fans.
'He did not want publicity': Adhikari
Speaking to reporters after the visit, Adhikari said Mithun Chakraborty underwent a minor surgery on Thursday night and had chosen to keep the matter private.
According to IANS, Adhikari said, "He did not want publicity over the development. He is doing well. Will be released soon."
He also highlighted the actor's political contribution, saying, "His identity is beyond just his political life. His contribution behind the beginning of a nationalist government in West Bengal is immense. A small operation was performed. He is doing well now."
A five-decade cinematic legacy
Mithun Chakraborty has enjoyed a celebrated career in Indian cinema spanning more than five decades. He made his debut with Mrigayaa (1976), winning the National Film Award for Best Actor for his very first film.
He rose to nationwide and international fame with Disco Dancer (1982) and went on to deliver acclaimed performances in films such as Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Ghulami, Agneepath, Guru and The Kashmir Files.
During his career, he has received multiple National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards.
Apart from films, he became a familiar face on television as the Grand Master of Dance India Dance and later served as a judge on several popular reality shows.
From Parliament to BJP campaign trail
Mithun Chakraborty has also played an active role in politics. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a Trinamool Congress member before resigning in 2016, citing health reasons.
He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has since emerged as one of its prominent campaigners in West Bengal, actively participating in major election campaigns, including the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections.
The veteran actor is now recovering well and is expected to return home once discharged from the hospital.
