Mamata’s ‘fake injury’ claim: Suvendu warns, ‘don’t dig too deep’

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday warned former chief minister Mamata Banerjee against “digging too deep” into the disclosure of her 2021 medical records, saying he could make additional X-ray and MRI reports public if the issue was pursued further.

The remarks came hours after Banerjee's lawyer served a legal notice on state-run SSKM Hospital and Bangur Institute of Neurosciences, seeking an explanation over how her medical records relating to her 2021 Nandigram injury came into Adhikari's possession and were subsequently made public.

‘X-ray, MRI reports can be made public’

Speaking to reporters after a state Cabinet meeting at Nabanna, Adhikari said: “Do not poke around too much. If I start showing the X-ray plates and MRI reports, you will not be able to step out of your house.”

He also said he could disclose where he obtained the documents if necessary.

Adhikari claimed the records were not supposed to be at SSKM and suggested that Banerjee had left documents in her chamber at the Chief Minister's Office in Nabanna.

He did not specify whether the records had actually been obtained from her office or residence.

Mamata’s lawyer questions medical record disclosure

Banerjee's lawyer, Arka Nag, sent the legal notice by email to senior officials of SSKM and the Bangur Institute, seeking clarification over the alleged unauthorised disclosure of her medical information.

The notice questions how the records reached the incumbent chief minister and whether permission or any court order existed for their disclosure.

It also raises concerns over the handling and possible further disclosure of Banerjee's medical records.

Row over 2021 Nandigram injury rekindled

The controversy began after Adhikari recently produced what he described as a March 11, 2021, radiology report from the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences.

According to Adhikari, the report showed no evidence of fracture or dislocation. He cited the document while alleging that Banerjee had falsely claimed a leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign.

These are Adhikari's allegations and have not been established as fact by the reported medical-record dispute.

Adhikari has also announced that the state government would initiate a fresh inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Banerjee's injury claims once the prevailing election-related restrictions permit further action.

Medical records become fresh political flashpoint

The dispute has now shifted from the nature of Banerjee's 2021 injury to the question of how confidential medical records were obtained and disclosed publicly.

While Adhikari has indicated that additional records could be released, Banerjee's legal team is seeking accountability from the medical institutions over the alleged disclosure of her private medical information.

The hospitals' response to the legal notice will be closely watched.
