Agartala, Aug 22 (IBNS): The government and people of Tripura gave a rousing welcome to Olympian and gymnast Dipa Karmakar and her coach Bisweshwar Nandi on Monday as they arrived in Agartala, the media reported.

Although Dipa missed the bronze medal in the vault final in Rio by a whisker, she will always be known as the first Indian woman to participate in an Olympics gymnastics event.

Dipa and her coach travelled to the Vivekananda Stadium in Agartala in a motorcade, with the duo riding an open vehicle, to the delight of the people gathered to welcome them.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and other ministers were present to greet her.

The CM declared a job promotion and cash prize for Dipa and Nandi.

Dipa will be promoted from Sports Officer to Assistant Director and her coach will be promoted to the position of Deputy Director in the Sports Affairs and Youth department, the media reported.

The government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Tripura on Tuesday in honour of Dipa.
