Shubman Gill named Indian Test captain for England tour

| @indiablooms | May 24, 2025, at 03:59 pm

Mumbai/IBNS: Indian batter Shubman Gill was on Saturday picked as the captain of the national men's team for the upcoming Test series in England.

Gill will succeed Rohit Sharma, who retired from Tests earlier this month.

The Indian selectors thought Gill as the suitable Team India captain in the red ball despite premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah being Rohit's deputy even in the last series.

India had won the only Test in the last Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia under Bumrah's leadership.
On choosing Gill as the skipper, chief selector Ajit Agarwal said, "You don't pick Captains for 1-2 tours. You want to invest in something that is going to help us going forward. We have seen some progress in him over the last 2 years.

"There is no doubt, it is going to be tough doing a 5 match series in England. Maybe we will have to learn on the job a little, but we are very confident and that is the reason we are picking him..."

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been picked as the vice captain of the side.

Apart from Rohit, India will also miss star batter Virat Kohli, who announced retirement from Test earlier this month.

The Test series will commence on June 20 in Leeds before the action moves to Birmingham for the second Test.

The Lord’s Cricket Ground will host the third Test, beginning on July 10, 2025.
Old Trafford and Kennington Oval will host the fourth and fifth Tests of the series respectively.

India’s squad: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav
