Kolkata/IBNS: South Africa bowled out India for 189 in the first innings of the maiden Test against India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday.

India took a lead of 30 runs in the first innings.

KL Rahul was the top scorer for India with his 39.

Simon Harmer picked four wickets for the Proteas.

India suffered a blow as their captain Shubman Gill left the field after experiencing a neck sprain just three balls into his innings.

Gill suffered the sprain immediately after a sweep shot that earned him a boundary, the only runs he had scored before retiring hurt.

The skipper did not come out to bat later in a shot in the arm for South Africa.

The Indian cricket board BCCI posted an update on X, "Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress."
