'We need you': Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi lead Bollywood's emotional appeal to Sonam Wangchuk to end hunger strike

Mumbai/IBNS: Veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Shabana Azmi, and Soni Razdan, along with several eminent personalities, have appealed to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to end his hunger strike as concerns mount over his deteriorating health on the 18th day of his fast.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in national-level competitive examinations.

Eminent personalities extend support

In a joint statement, signed by several prominent figures including Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, writer Arundhati Roy, and economist Jayati Ghosh, the signatories expressed solidarity with Wangchuk's movement while urging him to call off the fast.

"We salute your sense of purpose, the determination and courage with which you are spearheading this movement for students and youth across the country," the statement said, as quoted by Deccan Herald.

The statement added: "We request you to please consider ending this hunger strike immediately in the interests of the longer and more difficult struggle ahead. This battle is a marathon, not a sprint, and we need you, your strength and leadership in the days to come."

Shabana Azmi's emotional message

Actor Shabana Azmi shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, urging Wangchuk to prioritise his health while continuing the fight for students.

"Our country truly needs people like you. You have stood up against injustice and stood firmly for the truth, and we are proud of you.

"That is why we sincerely request you to end your fast. Your guidance and leadership inspire our students and give them the courage to keep fighting. This is a long battle that must continue, and for that, it is essential that you remain healthy. We stand with you."

Soni Razdan echoes the appeal

Actor Soni Razdan also appealed to Wangchuk through an Instagram post, sharing a note with the caption: "We need you. Don't leave us."

'I don't want Phunsukh Wangdu to die': '3 Idiots' star Omi Vaidya's emotional appeal

Actor Omi Vaidya, best known for playing 'Chatur' in the blockbuster film 3 Idiots, has voiced support for Wangchuk, who is camped at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

In a video shared on Instagram, Vaidya appealed to the public to pay attention to Wangchuk's protest, saying the issue had not received adequate media coverage.

Health concerns intensify

The appeal comes amid growing concerns over Wangchuk's health as his hunger strike entered its 18th day.

Several political leaders, activists and members of the film fraternity have urged both the government and the protestors to initiate dialogue and find a resolution while ensuring Wangchuk's well-being.
