Two quakes hit Nepal, tremors felt in India

Kolkata/New Delhi, May 12 (IBNS) Two successive earthquakes shook Nepal on Tuesday afternoon as tremors were felt across India with panic-stricken people in Delhi, Patna, Kolkata and Siliguri rushing out of the buildings to gather on the streets for safety.

The epicentre of the quakes are located in already devastated Nepal. Experts said it is an after shock of the April 25 tremor.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) report said the magnitude of the first earthquake at around 12 35 pm was 7.4 with epicenter in eastof  Kathmandu in Nepal again. The intensity is considered "great".

This is the second major tremor in a fortnight after the April 25 quake that left dead thousands of people in Nepal and scores in India.

However, no casualty or loss of property have been reported so far following Tuesday's earthquakes.

The second tremor of the day  was felt at around  1 09 pm measuring  5.6 on the Richter scale with its epicentre being  25km south-east of Kodari,
Nepal.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted: "News of an earthquake hitting Nepal again has come. Several parts of India also felt the tremors. MHA [Ministry of Home Affairs] is collecting more details and info."

People in many places, like in Gurgaon of National Capital Region, rushed out of their homes and offices.

In Kolkata and In Siliguri in north Bengal people also rushed out of their houses and work places.

"I saw chunks of concrete falling off the building in which our office is located," said an employee in a Siliguri office.

In Bihar towns and like Gaya and Madhubani felt strong termors.

Panicky people rushed out of  houses and work places swarming streets as the tremor was felt.

In several places water reservoirs overflowed under the impact of the quake.

Nepal witnessed a massive earthquake on Apr 25 last, resulting in the death of over 8000 people.
