Teaching of core subjects is as per RTE norms: Tawde on Madarasas controversy

New Delhi, July 2 (IBNS): Amid controversy, Maharashtra Minister Vinod Tawde ‏ said institutions not teaching children under national curriculum framework are considered out of school.

"Teaching of core subjects is as per RTE norms under which, children not taught under Nat'l Curriculum framework are considered out of school," Tawde tweeted.

"Teaching of core subjects like sci, math alongside religion in Madarasas is aimed at betterment of students, & not to hurt religious feelings," he said.

A fresh controversy triggered amid reports that the state government has said that madrasas not teaching subjects like Maths, English and Science will be considered as non-schools.

Maharashtra Minorities Minister Eknath Khadse had told CNN-IBN that the government believes that Madrasas don't offer formal education.

The state government has  directed the district administrations to declare their students "out-of-school children", reports said.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defends the move as a means to bring madrassa students into mainstream formal education.

According to a 2013 study, there are nearly 2000 madrassas in Maharashtra imparting education to over 1.5 lakh students.

Calling the move unconstitutional, Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam said, "No child should be discriminated along religious lines. We are going to take the issue in the state Assembly."
