New Delhi/IBNS: Top lawyers of the Supreme Court have appealed to Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana to take suo moto cognizance of the calls for "ethnic cleansing" given by religious leaders in Delhi and Haridwar, media reports said.

In a letter to the CJI, the top lawyers have listed the names of the people who gave the hate speech targeting the Muslim community along with a few links related to the incident.

Eminent lawyers Dushyant Dave, Prashant Bhushan, Vrinda Grover, Salman Khurshid were among the signatories of the letter.

An excerpt of the letter reads, "The aforementioned events and the speeches delivered during the same are not mere hate speeches but amount to an open call for murder of an entire community."

"The speeches pose a grave threat not just to the unity and integrity of our country but also endanger the lives of millions of Muslim citizens," it adds.

In one of the videos, a religious leader named Sadhvi Annapurna, was heard saying,"If you want to finish them off, then kill them... We need 100 soldiers who can kill 20 lakh of them to win this."

Though Haridwar Police have registered cases against three religious leaders, an action is yet to be taken.
