'Candidate fled': Prashant Kishor jibes BJP over Bankipur nominee change

Kishor mocked the BJP's last-minute decision, claiming it reflected the party's nervousness over the contest in what has long been considered one of its strongholds.

In response to the BJP's swap of candidates, Kishor said, "The people's power is supreme. For years, Opposition candidates were forced to flee out of fear of the BJP and central probe agencies. But the situation has changed.

"Today, it is the BJP's own candidate who has fled even before the election. The BJP is now clueless about whom to field from a seat it once considered its stronghold. But rest assured, whoever the party nominates will face defeat when the results are declared."

BJP Changes Candidate

The BJP has withdrawn the candidature of Abhishek Kumar, popularly known as Bunty, and fielded its youth leader Neeraj Kumar Sinha instead.

The change comes just days after Bunty's name was approved by the BJP's Central Election Committee.

While Bunty has cited family reasons for stepping aside and the BJP has described the move as an internal administrative decision, political observers believe the last-minute switch reflects the party's assessment of the increasingly high-profile contest.

Analysts say the BJP may have opted for a stronger candidate as Prashant Kishor's entry has transformed what was initially expected to be a relatively comfortable election for the ruling alliance into a keenly fought battle.

Why the Bypoll Was Called

The by-election to the Kayastha-dominated Bankipur constituency, scheduled for July 30, was necessitated after BJP leader Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha, vacating the Assembly seat.
